When pet memorial plaques are engraved, the naturally occurring pores of the pet memorial plaque are opened at the microscopic level. If not properly sealed, this can introduce vulnerability in the memorial plaque. The results of not properly sealing the memorial stone are not evident at first, moisture damage can occur years later. The most vulnerable type of pet memorial marker is the type that is displayed outdoors. To remove this vulnerability, the plaque needs to be submitted to a special chemical sealing bath. When the chemical sealant is applied after the engraving process, the pores of the pet memorial markers are closed and this prevents damaging moisture from ever entering the pet marker. Unfortunately most engravers do not take this extra step. Our suggestion is that whatever engraver you may choose, be sure they take this extra step which will preserve the pet memorial plaque for years to come.
